Walnut, oak or paint: choosing a media wall finish.

How the three most popular media wall finishes look, age and live with a TV, and how to decide which one belongs in your room.

A media wall is usually the largest single surface in a living room, so the finish sets the tone for everything around it. Most of our clients narrow it down to three: walnut, white oak or a painted finish. Each one does a different job.

01Walnut: warm, rich and screen-friendly

Walnut is the most requested finish on our walls for a reason. Its dark, even tone makes a black screen disappear when it is off, which is exactly what most people want from a media wall. It pairs well with brass, bronze and warm lighting. Walnut lightens slightly and turns a little more golden over the years, so the wall softens with age rather than fading.

02White oak: calm and architectural

Rift-sawn white oak has a straight, quiet grain that reads as modern and clean. It suits lighter rooms, stone fireplaces and Scandinavian or Japanese-leaning interiors. The trade-off is contrast: a large black screen stands out more against pale oak, so we often pair oak walls with a darker console or a framed niche around the TV.

03Paint: crisp and endlessly flexible

A painted wall can match your trim exactly or go bold in a deep green, navy or oxblood. Painted panels give the sharpest lines, which makes them ideal for framed or shaker-style detailing. Paint can be touched up on site, and a color change years later does not mean replacing the wall.

04Mixing finishes

Some of the best walls use two. A walnut field with a painted console, or a painted wall with a stone or lacquered console, gives the eye somewhere to rest. The rule of thumb: let one finish lead and keep the second to one element.

05How to decide

- If the TV is on most of the day, choose the finish you like with the screen on. - If the TV is off most of the time, go darker so the screen recedes. - If the room gets strong sun, ask to see samples by your window; every wood shifts in direct light. - If you may repaint the room soon, a painted wall in a neutral keeps options open.
